As a regional leader the Australian Government plays a critical role in confronting gender inequality and violence against women in Papua New Guinea.

In December 2014 the Government announced a five-year plan to promote gender equality in PNG during a visit to the region by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

The plan focuses on creating leadership and economic opportunities for women and effectively reducing family sexual violence.

In a statement Ms Bishop said, “Australia and PNG recognise that women who are economically secure can better access education and health services.  They have expanded opportunities to take on leadership or decision-making roles in their communities and workplaces, boosting economic and political participation.”

During her visit Ms Bishop participated in a roundtable with civil society representatives and political leaders focusing on women’s economic empowerment and family and sexual violence.

Ms Bishop has conducted multiple diplomatic trips to various regions of Papua New Guinea promoting development and gender issues including maternal health and support for victims of sexual and family violence.

In recent years the PNG Government has committed to landmark legal reforms to combat gender-based violence and with support from the Australian Government is slowly delivering services to improve access to justice for victims.
